We all look forward to spring, but those of us who suffer from seasonal allergies might be a bit concerned, as the quality of life for allergy sufferers is often very limited. Many people with allergic conditions also suffer from sleep disorders but are often unaware of it. So how can allergies affect our sleep and what can we do about it?

Allergies and sleep problems

Allergies occur when pollen, which is abundant in spring, and other allergens trigger an excessive immune response. Depending on which allergens cause the symptoms, you may be more exposed to them at night. The most common allergens include:

  • Pollen
  • House dust
  • Mold
  • Pet hair
  • Textiles
  • Medications

These substances irritate the nasal passages and cause symptoms like sneezing, a runny nose, and watery eyes. Difficulty breathing and a blocked nose affect our sleep. Especially contact with house dust mites and pet hair is more frequent at night and can worsen symptoms.

When allergies affect the duration and quality of sleep, it can significantly impact quality of life. General discomfort and daytime tiredness due to sleep problems can, for example, prevent you from engaging in activities during the day or being productive at work or school. Consistent sleep deprivation or regularly poor sleep quality, however, increase the risk of serious illnesses such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes

  • Long-Term Mood Disorders
  • Concentration Difficulties
  • Weakened Immune System
  • Disrupted hormone balance
  • Weight Gain
  • Cardiovascular Diseases

So what can you do as an allergy sufferer to sleep better and feel better

Reduce exposure to pollen & household dander

If you are allergic to pollen, it is beneficial to keep windows closed during high pollen counts to prevent them from entering the bedroom with the airflow. It can also help to keep pets out of the bedroom, as this reduces pet hair and dander. Don’t forget to wash your hands after petting your furry friend to prevent allergens and dander from getting into your nose or eyes. Showering before going to bed can also help remove pollen and dander that have been transferred to your body during the day. This can already lead to a more comfortable and hygienic night's rest.

Change bedding frequently

Even if your bed looks clean on the outside, a lot can accumulate in your sheets, mattress, or bedding that you can't see: Every night you lose thousands of dead skin cells and body fluids. On average, people release up to one liter of sweat per night into their bedding. This can become a breeding ground for mites and bacteria. Experts generally recommend changing bedding, meaning pillowcases, duvet covers, and sheets, once a week. It is therefore sensible to have several sheets and laundry sets at home so you don't have to wash so often. If you are still looking for bedding, take a look at the Third of Life shop; we have a range of pillowcases, fitted sheets, protectors & bedding to choose from. Many of the products feature functional and especially hygienic materials.

Pay attention to hygienic products and products with anti-mite features

If you suffer from a house dust allergy, products with anti-mite features can also be very helpful. Third of Life has developed products designed to prevent mites and bacteria from accumulating in the bed. Optimal moisture transport also promotes a good and hygienic climate in the bed, which can also prevent the settlement of mites.

For example, the molton mattress protector protects the mattress from skin particles, making it harder for mites to settle. Third of Life also uses the special ESSENTIAL technology from Proneem here. The combination of margosa extract and zinc pyrithione enables complete elimination of mites, bacteria, and odors. Additionally, the mattress protector offers the mattress protection from liquids, sweat, and stains thanks to an integrated polyurethane membrane.

The BLANCO duvet provides health-conscious sleep with high comfort all year round. The Sanitized® protection keeps the duvet free from bacteria, dust mites, and odors, making it ideal for allergy and asthma sufferers according to dermatological tests. Thus, the BLANCO duvet guarantees a health-conscious and hygienic sleep. Additionally, the innovative Trevira® hollow fiber ensures high breathability and excellent moisture regulation during sleep. The peachskin finish of the duvet cover also gives the duvet a comfortable softness and fluffiness.
