Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find our most frequently asked questions and answers. We have sorted them into different categories for you.

General Questions and Answers

Which pillow suits me?

Some of our pillows are pre-shaped. This means they are contoured to ideally support your body during sleep depending on your sleeping position (back, side, stomach). This is important to avoid tension and circulation problems. You can find out which pillow fits your sleeping position perfectly in our product overview .

Since there are always certain preferences regarding pillow height, it is also advisable to pay attention to the height of the pillows when choosing (dimensions: width/depth/height).

Alternatively, we recommend the Third of Life Pillow Advisor where you will definitely find the right pillow.

Do I absolutely need an extra cover for my pillow?

No, since you can easily clean the covers at any time, you can sleep directly on the pillowcases. However, to achieve the desired thermoregulating effect, this is not necessary. The effect is also achieved if you use the pillowcase of your bedding over it.
In addition, you will find matching pillow covers for many of our pillows in modern colors

Can I wash the pillow core made of visco memory foam?

The core of the pillow, as with other visco-elastic pillows, should not be washed. The material is very delicate, and unfortunately, we cannot guarantee your attempts to wash the core.

How can I wash the functional fabrics?

You can easily wash the covers at any time in the machine at 40 degrees Celsius or the QuickDry cover at 30 degrees Celsius. However, due to the special properties of the cover, please do not tumble dry, iron, or bleach it. Professional dry cleaning of the cover is possible, though.

Are the duvets from Third of Life suitable for allergy sufferers?

The BLANCO and VERDA duvets are ideally suited for allergy sufferers and asthmatics according to dermatological tests. They provide a health-conscious sleep with high comfort all year round. The Sanitized® protection keeps the duvets free from bacteria, house dust mites, and odors.

How can I wash the blankets from Third of Life?

You can easily wash the duvets anytime in the machine at 40 degrees Celsius. The duvet can be dried in the dryer on a gentle cycle. However, due to the special properties of the cover, do not tumble dry, iron, or bleach.

How does a four-season blanket differ from an all-year blanket and a single-season blanket?

The all-season duvet consists of a single layer and, thanks to ventilation zones and the Aktiv and VentiFill Active fiber filling, provides active climate regulation. The duvet offers thermal comfort with optimal moisture control and is therefore suitable for both winter and summer.

The Four Seasons AERO duvet consists of 3 layers that can be combined depending on the season, allowing you to stay ideally covered all year round. The material is the same as in the all-season duvet, but the difference lies in the combination of the 3 layers. The winter duvet (220g/m²) keeps you comfortably warm, while the summer duvet (150g/m²) provides a pleasantly cool sleeping experience during hot temperatures. For cold feet, the duvet also has a separate warming layer that can optionally be added in the foot area. Overall, the 3 layers offer six combination options for every season according to individual needs.

FAQs Bedding, Fitted Sheets, and Mattress Protectors

How hot can I wash the bed sheets from Third of Life?

How often should you change your bed linens?

There is no general rule for this. The answer to this question depends on a number of external factors and your sleeping habits.

However, experts recommend changing your bedding, that is pillowcases, duvet covers, and bed sheets, once a week. If you want to learn more, read here:

FAQs Back Sleeper Pillows

To the back sleeper pillows

Which pillow is best suited for back sleepers?

In general, the best back sleeper pillow supports the side position, has an appropriate length, and is flexible to use on the go. This optimally supports ergonomics in the side position and sustainably improves sleep quality. The aiLigner Pillow can be ideally adjusted in height, making it suitable for back sleepers as well.

How high should a back sleeper pillow be?

A pillow for back sleepers should usually be between 6 and 10 cm high so that the head stays aligned with the spine and the neck is optimally supported. The pillow should not be too high to prevent bending and avoid tension. Flat, ergonomically shaped pillows or neck support pillows with medium height are especially suitable for back sleepers.

We recommend the ailigner Pillow here.

What is the best material for back sleeper pillows

Memory foam (visco foam) is especially suitable for back sleepers. This material provides stable, ergonomic support and adapts perfectly to the head and neck. Memory foam relieves pressure points, ensures stability, and prevents the head from being positioned too high. Latex is also supportive, breathable, and suitable for allergy sufferers. Both options promote a relaxed, natural head posture when lying on the back.

Can an ergonomic pillow help against snoring?

A side sleeper pillow made of visco foam (memory foam) requires special care because the pillow core is not suitable for washing machines or dryers, and water can damage the material.

Cleaning and Washability of Visco Foam Pillows

  • The pillow core must never be cleaned in the washing machine or dryer, as moisture and mechanical stress can destroy the foam.
  • Surface cleaning is done spot-wise: stains should be gently dabbed with a slightly damp cloth and mild delicate detergent, not rubbed or soaked.
  • To remove odors and for care, you can sprinkle baking soda, let it sit, and then vacuum it off, or use gentle pillow sprays like Third of Life SPRAY²Clean.
  • Covers are usually removable and can be washed regularly in the washing machine according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Drying and Durability

  • After cleaning, let the pillow core dry only in the air and in the shade (never on a radiator or in direct sunlight).
  • Before putting the cover back on, fully air out and check for residual moisture to prevent mold.
  • Regular airing and vacuuming with a handheld vacuum cleaner extends the lifespan and keeps the pillow hygienic.
Which filling is better: Memory Foam, Latex, Hollow Fiber, Microfiber?

Memory Foam:
Adapts to your shape. Relieves neck pressure. Ideal for quiet sleepers.

Latex:
Elastic, breathable. Good for heavy sweaters. Very durable.

Hollow Fiber:
Soft, easy to care for. Easily washable, great for allergy sufferers.

Microfiber:
Light, soft. Affordable and clean, but less supportive

How high should a side sleeper pillow be?
  • For narrow shoulders (under 40 cm): about 5–7 cm on a soft mattress, up to 8 cm on a firmer mattress.
For example, the HADAR LOW Pillow
  • For average shoulders (around 45 cm): about 7–10 cm (depending on mattress firmness).
For example, the LUNA Neck Support Pillow
  • For very broad shoulders: 9–15 cm, adjust individually if needed. For example, the aiLigner Pillow
  • As a rule of thumb: The shoulder sinks deeper on a soft mattress, so it’s better to choose a slightly flatter pillow.
Do side sleeper pillows help with neck and back pain?

Yes, side sleeper pillows can specifically help relieve neck and back pain when they are ergonomically chosen and used correctly. By optimally supporting the head, neck, and spine, the natural alignment is promoted, pressure is relieved, and bending of the head is prevented. The pillow fills the space between the shoulder and mattress, relieving muscles and discs and reducing the occurrence of tension.

Are there side sleeper pillows specifically for children?

Yes, there are special side sleeper pillows for children. See here: Children’s pillows made of visco foam

They are smaller, lighter, and often come with washable, skin-friendly covers. Common shapes include U-, J-, or classic “I”-pillows – some models feature child-friendly designs (e.g., panda, sheep) and provide ergonomic support for the neck, back, and legs.

Such pillows are especially useful for children from about 5 years old who mainly sleep on their side or turn a lot during the night. For very young children, larger “side sleeper pillows” are not recommended – here, so-called positioning pillows (e.g., side positioning rails) with a medical function are used only for special sleep positioning.
