About Us

Why actually sleep?


Sleep makes up one third of our lives, so a total of around 25-30 years. Moreover, recovery during sleep is essential for our performance during the day as well as for our overall health. We get fit while we sleep! How can it be that we know almost nothing about this area, we thoughtlessly lie down to sleep for a few hours and hope to be fit the next morning? Why do we invest so little here, more than in any other important area of life?

The idea to develop products to optimize our sleep came to the two founders Frieder and Hanno back in 2011: On a 4-week bike tour from Malaga to Munich, over 2900 km including crossing the Alps, Hanno realized every morning how contradictory our behavior is: Every day he rode more than 100 km in highly functional and expensive cycling clothing. But at night he lay in T-shirt and boxer shorts on simple sheets in Spanish or French hotels. He couldn’t sleep well, didn’t regenerate enough during sleep to become fit, and was therefore not well prepared for the challenges of the next day. Either it was too hot and he woke up soaked in sweat, or he slept poorly because the air conditioning cooled him down too much at night. It was no different on his ski and trekking tours. Frieder also knew these sleepless, performance-impairing, bad nights from his consulting days and many business trips to numerous hotels.

Two things suddenly became clear to the two of them: On the one hand, how important good sleep is for maximum performance and resilience during the day – nothing really new. On the other hand, how little attention we pay to sleep – and the idea was born! We now optimize many areas of our lives to the max and enjoy expressing ourselves there. But sleep, after all almost a third of our lifetime, we only experience unconsciously, know little about it, and are hardly aware of its importance for our active time during the day.


The Team

The brand Third of Life stands for one third of human life, sleep. But who is behind Third of Life?

We are a team of people who, based on our own experiences, know exactly why sleep is so important. We have experienced how crucial good sleep is for our well-being, performance, and health. Third of Life was founded by Frieder Kuhn and Hanno Deyle and consists of a diverse team of product developers and marketing experts.

I am fascinated by the potential and intensity with which optimizing sleep can positively influence my life and our lives. We see sleep and its improvement as the next societal and health topic after decades focused on nutrition and sports. For this, we want to become THE partner for our customers.

Hanno, what fascinates you about sleep?

I am fascinated by the possibility of transferring product ideas and elements from the field of sports to the field of sleep and adapting them specifically. Because even in sleep, we move, we sweat or get cold – albeit to a lesser extent.

What fascinates me most about sleep is how dependent we are on it. We all need it, and if we don’t get enough, we only function partially. No matter how much we try to thwart sleep, in the end, we are always grateful when we get a good, restful night and can face the daily challenges of life with full energy and a sharp mind.

The science of sleeping is a fascinating topic to observe not only in humans but in all animals; how our sleeping patterns differ from one species to another is so interesting! Sloths sleep up to 20 hours daily, humans an average of one third of their lives, and giraffes only 1.9 hours a day! Dreams are also extremely amazing to me. Scientific revelations, book ideas, musical inspiration—all can occur while we dream, isn’t that incredible?

I am fascinated by dreams. Every night, a person dreams about 4-6 times. While the body regenerates & relaxes, the mind processes experiences and impressions from the past at full speed.
