Do you also often wonder how often you should actually change your bedding? Generally, washing bedding is not everyone's favorite task. A study by the National Sleep Foundation found that about 40 percent of Germans change their bedding only every three weeks. While we are used to washing our clothes when the laundry basket is full or cleaning the apartment when visible dust appears, at the end of the day we usually fall into bed without giving a thought to the bedding.

Unwashed sheets collect a lot of unpleasant things

Even if the bedding looks clean on the outside, a lot can accumulate in your sheets that you can't see: Every night you lose thousands of dead skin cells and body fluids. On average, people release up to a liter of sweat per night onto their bedding. This can become a breeding ground for mites and bacteria. Not a pleasant thought…

So how often should you change your bedding?

There is no general rule for this. The answer depends on a number of external factors and your sleeping habits. However, experts generally recommend changing bedding, meaning pillow and duvet covers as well as sheets, once a week.

It also makes sense to have several sheets and laundry sets at home so you don't have to wash so often. If you are still looking for bedding, take a look at the Third of Life Shop; we have a range of bedding sets, pillowcases, fitted sheets, and mattress protectors to choose from.

What Health Consequences Can Insufficient Changing Have?

Especially if you are allergic, house dust mites can be dangerous. They can multiply quickly in unwashed bedding because these tiny creatures feed on dead skin that accumulates in your bedding. House dust mites can cause allergy symptoms such as a runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, and general discomfort. This can lead to sleep disturbances, as it becomes difficult to get a good night's sleep under these conditions.

If you have allergy symptoms or already suffer from a house dust mite allergy, a mattress pad made of molton can be very helpful. It protects the mattress from the penetration of skin particles, making it harder for mites to settle. The Molton Mattress Protector MILA from Third of Life also uses the special ESSENTIAL technology from Proneem. The combination of margosa extract and zinc pyrithione enables complete elimination of mites, bacteria, and odors.Additionally, the mattress pad protects the mattress thanks to an integrated polyurethane membrane against liquids, sweat, and stains.

Another health consequence of insufficient bed hygiene can be skin problems. If bedding is not changed often enough, the germs that accumulate on it can lead to inflammations such as eczema or acne. If you have sensitive skin, a pillowcase with aloe vera extract can also help, as it has anti-inflammatory and skin-caring properties.

Tips on How to Properly Care for Your Bedding

  • Always wash duvet covers at 60°C or higher; more detailed care instructions can be found on the cover’s label.
  • Duvets and pillows themselves should be washed at least twice a year. However, this is not always possible; hygiene sprays or special cleaning can be an option here.
  • Regularly clean stuffed animals

Another TIP: Do NOT make your bed immediately after getting up!
This tip may seem unconventional. But a neatly arranged duvet can trap moisture and heat in the bed, making it irresistible for dust mites.

Care instructions for Third of Life pillows

If you already own a pillow from us, you can easily wash the functional covers at 40 or 30 degrees Celsius in the washing machine at any time. More detailed instructions on washing temperature and care can be found on the care label of the respective cover. However, the pillow core must never be washed in the machine!

It’s best to use the Cleaning Sprays from Third of Life, as they are antibacterial and fight any odors. Simply spray the pillow on all sides and let it work and air out for several hours.

Sleep Better with Improved Temperature Management – Here’s How

Anyone who is too warm or too cold at night sleeps more restlessly – everyone feels that immediately. But temperature is much more than a matter of comfort: it actively controls how deep and restorative our sleep is. Studies have shown for years that the body falls asleep best when it can efficiently release excess heat and the core body temperature slightly drops.
